…in Wikifunctions terms, I think of a glossary as a pair of Z12s: a term and a gloss. Pairing the two means that a term in any language is bound to its gloss in any language, which is kinda neat.--GrounderUK (talk) 13 March 2024 (UTC)

interresting, but a gloss is a bit poor as a data (that why lexemes have other statements on senses, like a link to a Q-id)

depending on what you want to do with it, just the gloss may not be enough

That’s why I think of it as a gloss rather than a definition. There would generally be a definition that references the pair, and that would have as much or as little structure as one’s purposes required.--GrounderUK (talk) 13 March 2024 (UTC)

…if we were going to create a glossary type, I'd recommend a typed map of a typed pair of monolingual texts to a multi-liingual text – <[term, definition] => translation> or similar.

Uses

Multilingual glossaries.

In a multi-lingual glossary, a single item may have terms in more than one language and/or glosses in more than one language.

A term in a single language may have a gloss in multiple languages. Each gloss may itself be a separate term with glosses in multiple languages. Thus aa apparently simple one-to-many or many-to-one relationship becomes an extended many-to-many chain and the glossary can be maintained only with great difficulty.

Smart page links

You want to link to a Wikipedia page in a multilingual context. You could currently represent that with a Wikidata item like Universe (Q1). Q1 has links to a page in many Wikipedia versions and any language may have more than one Lexeme like QL12926 (QL12926) with senses where the item for this sense (P5137) is Q1. The many-to-many mapping can be represented in a Multilingual gloss. The reader can then navigate straight to their default Q1 page or choose from different Wikipedia versions or just see what the label would be in a selection of different languages.

Thanks. At the word-by-word or morpheme-by-morpheme level, that’s generally one-to-one or one-to-many, which we already support with Z12/multilingual text. This proposal is for a pair of Z12s, so that it’s one-to-one at the level of individual “terms” and “definitions”. This means that the multilingual “terms” are collectively bound to the multilingual “definitions”, and each provides its own multilingual gloss. If you were going to propose an interlinear gloss Type, I’m not sure that you would want it to use this Type rather than Z12. But I’m not sure that you wouldn’t!
